Hugh’s Essay

By Night When Others Soundly Slept by Anna Bradstreet reflects on her Puritan belief. Anne was part of the Winthrop Fleet which carried 1000 Puritans who all migrated to New England from England. In America, she moved from place to place due to illness of the villagers.  She finally arrived in Cambridge, Massachusetts with all the other Puritans.

Before moving to New England, at the age of 16, she married Simon Bradstreet, who later became the governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. At that time in the Puritan society, they believed marriage was ordained by God, and it was a gift from God. She loves her gift so much that through a number of poems, she shows her love towards God. The last two lines shows her attitude towards God and how she will serve him for all eternity.

With the Puritan background, we see the lifestyles of her, and other Puritans. She mentions how when everyone else sleeps, she is awake and cries while praying. She explains how God is listening to her, and fill her hungry soul (personification) with kindness and goodness, and take away her fears. In the last stanza, she asks herself what she will do for God. Every word in the poem, reflects on the mighty power, God.

God was the one that saved her and others in times of sadness and fear. God saved them, so what the Puritans could do was to love him, and serve him for all eternity. The Puritan society was the Puritan way was part of her life and kept this as part of her until she died. In many poems including this one, we see her background has had a huge impact.

By Night When Others Soundly Slept by Anna Bradstreet reflects on her Puritan belief. Anne was part of the Winthrop Fleet (It was a group of 11 ships led by John Winthrop) which carried 1000 Puritans, who all migrated to New England from England. The last two lines shows her attitude towards God and how she will serve him for all eternity.

With the Puritan background, we can see the lifestyles of her, and other Puritans as well. She mentions how when everyone else sleeps, she is awake and cries while praying. She explains how God is listening to her, and filled her hungry soul (personification) with kindness and goodness, and take away her fears. In the last stanza, she asks herself what she will do for God. Every word in the poem, she reflects on the mighty power, God.

Argument

Those who consider first impression of the work as the key factor of judging whether it’s perfect or not might say we should always count on other people’s first work. However, I believe that we shouldn’t think one’s first work as the most important thing, and I agree with the idea that one’s work can always be revised by others and him/herself to make it much better than before. (Just like what I did some changes to Hugh’s essay to make it better)

Hugh’s essay starts off with describing Anna Bradstreet’s life. He uses evidence to show how hardships Anna Bradstreet went through until she arrived in Cambridge, Massachusetts. And later, he added specific evidence to support of Anna Bradstreet’s love for God. It  allowed readers to understand Anna’s feeling towards God and the reason why she decided to serve God for all eternity. Also, I liked how Hugh included not only Anna Bradstreet but also many other Puritans thought about God at that time. By explaining Puritans, Puritan society, and Anna Bradstreet’s belief toward God, Hugh gave us great impact and good analysis.

Hugh had a really good essay that was written down. However, I did make some changes in grammar, style of sentence, word, and added some information. Even though, I wasn’t good at English, I edited some grammar which I thought was wrong. I also added Information about Winthrop Fleet, because I thought some people might have no idea of what it is. By putting some adjective and word, it became more powerful statement than previous. I didn't really touch his conclusion since it was already done nicely.

By editing Hugh’s essay, I realized that even if I’m not that good at English compare to other students in our class, I was come up with some changes. I’m still not sure if I made correct changes, but I hope took some part in refining Hugh’s essay.

Overall, Hugh’s essay wasn’t really long but each paragraph had information that clearly stated Anna Bradstreet’s life and her love towards God. If I have a chance, I would like to do it again when I get better at English.
